Sugar

sugar industry

Sugar powers global consumption, with the industry generating nearly USD 100 billion in annual revenue worldwide. Brazil leads global sugar production by a significant margin, while India ranks second, contributing approximately 15% of the world’s total sugar output. Given its vast population and deep-rooted cultural preference for sweets, India also has high domestic consumption—making it both a major producer and a consistent importer of sugar.

Although sugar can be derived from various crops such as sugarcane, sugar beet, and others with high sugar content, India relies exclusively on sugarcane as its primary raw material.

Sugar is the second-largest agro-based industry in India, following the cotton textiles industry. A significant portion of the country’s sugar processing infrastructure, however, consists of small-capacity units, many of which are over 50 years old. These units involve multiple moving components, including rolling belts, crushers, and vibratory systems—all of which are highly susceptible to wear and operational failure.

In this context, Condition Monitoring emerges as a crucial factor—minimizing unplanned downtimes, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring sustainable plant performance in an industry where even short disruptions can have significant economic consequences.
